Cincinnati 20th, August : Stefanos Tsitsipas made the cut in a tough match in the quarterfinals as he defeated the big-serving American John Isner 7-6 (7-5) 7-5 and 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, in the Western & Southern Open quarterfinal on Friday night.Tsitsipas the world’s number seven, didn’t make his break point in the 8th game of the third set however he took advantage of it with his hands in order to take the lead in the closing stages of the match, according to DPA.It was a clean game of the Greek, with just nine unforced mistakes with the 41 winners he scored while Isner committed 21 unforced mistakes with 54 winners and 18 aces.
Tsitsipas will take on the world’s number one Daniil Medvedev in an intense semifinal following the world’s top-ranked Russian was too powerful for American Taylor Fritz.
Medvedev’s dominance on the serving court was the main story, with 18 aces compared to Fritz’s three, assisting him to stop the break point chances for six he had to face, while creating two of them.
Following Medvedev held off three set points in the first set, he quickly claimed the first three games of the second set to win comfortably.
Borna Coric’s amazing week continued, as the world’s top 152 defeated his third straight top-20 opponent, despite having no break points in his victory of 6-4, 6-4 over world number nine Felix Auguster-Aliassime.
The win follows victories against Spaniards Rafael Nadal and Roberto Bautista-Agut in the two rounds prior and he will now face Cameron Norrie for a place in his second career ATP Masters 1000 final, and the first since 2018.
Coric is expected to leap at least 86 places when the next rankings for the world are announced.
In the last match of the night, Norrie needed more than three hours to beat the world number 4 and one of the US Open favourites Carlos Alcaraz 7-6 (7-4) 7-6, 7-6 (4-7) 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (4-7).
The battle was back and forth, with Norrie ahead 4-1 in the second set but a dramatic return led to Alcaraz taking the set, and then leaping ahead by 3-1 in the final however Norrie was able to come to win the match.
