However, with the decision taken by the central government, the TS government hopes to set up smart meters in the state.A total of 28,800 smart meters are already being set up at government offices and other offices in Hyderabad, power department officials said.

There are over a million household electricity connections across the state.Installing smart meters for all of them will cost thousands of crores.

Therefore, the authorities are of the view that if the subsidy to be given by the central government is increased from 15 per cent to 50 to 60 per cent, it will be possible to set up these smart meters in all the villages.

The union govt hopes to complete the smart prepaid meters installation for all government buildings in the states by December 2023.

The department of electricity has already started working on this.Currently, the Telangana state government is planning to launch the smart meters with a recharge facility through a smartcard.
