Chennai, Nov 25, : , A court in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruppur district sentenced a man aged 29 to double life imprisonment for raping a minor girl and forcibly wed her. The incident took place in 2016, when the man was 24 and the minor girl was 14.
The man, a relative to the girl, raped her as she was alone at home, while she was taking a bath.His aunt and parents threatened the parents of his daughter with severe consequences if they didn’t agree to marry him.
After the marriage was legally registered on February 17, 2016, the mother of the minor girl approached Udumalpet’s all-women police station.The Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (Pocso) Act, Indian Pen Code and Child Marriage Act were used to charge him and he was brought before the Mahila court.
Sugandhi, a Mahila Court judge sentenced the person to double life imprisonment under Pocso Act.This includes seven years of rigorous imprisonment for criminally intimidating a minor girl and two years for child marital.
His parents were sentenced to two years in prison for child marriage.
The court also imposed a Rs 30,000 fine on him and ordered the state government pay Rs 4 lakh compensation to the girl.
The girl’s parents, and the man’s aunt, were both acquitted.
