Sources in the Tamil Nadu government told IANS that the primary reason has been a lot of complaints from social activists and environmentalists about the quarries that cause environmental hazards, such as the pollution of water sources that are freshwater.

Villupuram district collector D.Mohan directed all quarry owners in the district to adhere to the guidelines and adhere to the regulations of the government or risk being a victim of the wrath of the police. He has also advised quarry owners of the security of the people living near the quarry and to use skilled drivers in the trucks transporting the stone from the quarries.

Several incidents have been discovered in the district due to fast-moving trucks that were carrying stones from quarries.

The district collector has instructed quarry owners to notify residents before the rocks are being blasted in these quarry sites.

The district collector also advised quarry owners that there will regular inspections by the pollutant control board as well as other departments of the government. He also instructed them to keep all the documents in the proper place.

It is possible to note that environmentalists have expressed concern about the environmental pollution due to quarries in Southern districts of Tamil Nadu and this is another reason why the government to take action with strict measures.

P.R.Kesavaraj Director of the Environmental Study Centre, Madurai when speaking to IANS told IANS, “The quarries have been employing tactics which aren’t in conformity with the environmental regulations of the government. It’s a good thing that district collectors have started taking action against these quarries. It remains to be seen whether these actions will last or become an isolated event. If the right measures are taken it will be beneficial for the environment as well as the society.”
