New Delhi, January 1, : , Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of Science and Technology said Friday that Tele-medicine Technology will be India’s main pillar for the future healthcare system.
The Minister stated that telemedicine solutions such as telemedicine can save India $4-5B per year, and could replace half the in-person consultations.

He was speaking at the launch of the pilot teledigital healthcare programme at BHU Varanasi.

Singh stated that the first phase of the project will include Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh and Gorakhpur (in Uttar Pradesh) and Kamjong (in Manipur).

It will eventually be expanded to the whole country over the next few years.

Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council, an independent body of Department of Science and Technology at Centre, has developed a pilot Telediagnostics project with IIT Madras – Pravartak Foundation Technologies and CDAC Mohali.

According to the Minister, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Digital Health Mission, which aims to make healthcare affordable, accessible and available to everyone, especially those living in remote and difficult areas, is the next frontier.

Singh stated that Tele-medicine has been cost-effective in India by 30% to 30% more than similar in-person visits.

The Minister spoke out about drone delivery of vaccines to some areas of India.He said Robotic Surgery would soon be a reality due to rapid technological advancements.

He said that telemedicine was no longer an option, but a necessity.This is because 65 percent of India’s people live in rural areas, which have a doctor to patient ratio of one per 25,000 residents.

Therefore, they need the best medical advice from physicians based in cities and towns.
