Telangana to not procure paddy from Rabi farmers, blames Centre

Hyderabad, Nov 29, : After the Centre ruled out the lifting of parboiled rice form Telangana by the Centre, Chief Minister K.Chandrasekhar Rao announced Monday that the state government would not establish paddy procurement centers in the upcoming Rabi season.
He lashed out at the Centre for “runningaway” from its social responsibility and told farmers that neither the state has the financial resources nor the infrastructure to purchase rice.

Rao assured farmers that the government would buy all paddy from the current Kharif season.

Rao stated that even though the Centre has not agreed on a higher procurement target of 40 lakh tonnes, the state government would still procure the entire paddy, despite the losses.

KCR, as Rao is commonly known, stated that the Centre has agreed only to buy 40 lakh tonnes of paddy during the current season, though the expected production is 90 lakh tonnes.

He said that paddy not purchased by the Centre during this season would be dumped at Delhi’s India Gate and offices of the BJP.

After the meeting of state Cabinets, the Chief Minister addressed a news conference.They reviewed the situation after the Centre’s decision not to procure parboiled Rice from the state.

KCR noted that Rabi is only for the parboiled rice, which is cultivated because of the high temperatures in February-March.

Chief Telangana Rashtra Samithi, TRS, criticized the Centre for not achieving the annual target of raw rice that it will procure from the state.

He claimed that the Centre is abusing its social responsibility.”The government cannot view all issues in terms of profit or loss.He also said that the government has a social responsibility.

KCR claimed that it was the Centre’s Constitutional duty to procure food grains, distribute them via the Public Distribution System (PDS), and maintain buffer stocks in order to ensure food security and make the country self-sufficient in its food grains production.

He claimed that the Centre had been following “anti-farmer,” “anti-poor, and anti-middle-class” policies since the BJP was elected to power.

KCR claimed that the BJP government had killed 750 farmers with three farm laws.Prime Minister Narendra Modi retracted the same and apologized to farmers, fearing losing elections in Uttar Pradesh and other States.

He stated that India ranks below Bangladesh, Nepal, and Pakistan in the global hunger index.He ridiculed claims by the Centre that it couldn’t buy rice more because stocks were growing.

He suggested that Modi’s government should address the problem of hunger by distributing rice to the poor.

He stated that the Modi government will be thrown out of power and the relief will only come to the poor and the common man.

KCR claimed that the Centre treated them like beggars when they visited Delhi to discuss the issue of paddy procurement.He criticised Union Minister Piyush Goyal’s request for a delegation from state ministers if there was no other work.

He stated that the TRS would continue raising the issues of farmers in Parliament.He demanded the passage of the Minimum Support Price Act (MSP) during the current session.

He also reiterated his opposition to the proposed amendment of the Electricity Act.He claimed that the Centre was trying take control of electricity and force states to install meters for electricity connections for farmers.
