Hyderabad, Dec 8, 2008 : As health officials go door-to-door to expedite Covid-19 vaccinations and reach the 100 percent target in Telangana by December 31, there are increasing instances of vaccine hesitancy. One such incident occurred in Telangana’s Sangareddy on Tuesday.
A man climbed onto a tree to avoid being vaccinated.Ghousuddin refused to receive the vaccine when health workers reached his house at Rejinthal village, Nyalkal mandal in Sangareddy district.
Ghousuddin was resisted by Sardar Ali, his father, and other family members.The man climbed up a tree when the locals insisted.
Eye-witnesses claim that he sat on a tree for an hour before getting down after the health workers left.
Another incident occurred in Sangareddy.
Residents refused to receive the vaccine and tried to attack health workers who were going door-to-door to administer the doses.A group of residents in Nalsabgadda objected to the visit of the health workers and refused the vaccine.
They argued with officials and demanded that the vaccine be compulsory.
Tensions erupted in the area.
Police were informed by the health staff that a man attempted to attack them.They also protested against him.A police officer rushed to the scene and said that a case would only be opened if health workers filed a written complaint.The officer was able to convince the residents to get the vaccine.
To ensure 100% vaccination, health workers are going door-to-door in the state.The department is trying to administer the dose to eligible people by going to their homes, as 51 percent of them have not received the second dose despite having completed the gap between the two doses.
The director of public health stated that 2.58 crore (93%) of the 2.77 crore population have received the first dose.Only 1.37 million (49%) have received the second dose.
The percentage of eligible persons who have received the second dose in each of the 33 districts is 40 percent or less in 16 districts.
The lowest (16%) percentage of people who have received the second dose is in Kumaram Bheem.Only 19% have received the second dose in Vikarabad or Jogu Lamba Gadwal.
