May be scared of unexpected rains in Telangana, cotton farmers from Warangal and Khammam districts have sold their crop to private traders for a loss of at least Rs 1500 to Rs 2000 per quintal.

Though the production for this year is high, which led to falling in a price, farmers have okayed to sell their crop below the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Rs 4,500.

According to the latest reports, 15,525 quintals of cotton was brought to the Enumamula agriculture market, as the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) has not started its procurement centres yet.Reportedly, the farmers have agreed to sell their crop to private traders at Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,600 which is against Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,000 last year.

Several farmers said they had cultivated cotton based on the government’s instructions, but now the government isn’t helping to suppress their problems.

Many farmers alleged that traders have fixed prices themselves and the government failed to provide Minimum Support Price. The farmers have urged Telangana government to announce compensation for them.
