New Delhi, January 1, : .Taliban militants in Afghanistan were reported by RFE/RL to have vandalised or destroyed the graves of police and army commanders who died in August.
According to some reports, the Taliban also defiled monuments that were dedicated to those who opposed them during their first tenure in power in 1990.

Although the Taliban deny responsibility for most of these incidents, there have been a number of allegations made against them, including Afghans accusing them of violating Islamic traditions which advocate respecting the deceased.

According to the report, Taliban fighters are accused of attacking the grave of Daraya Khan Talash (ex-police commander) in Paktika province on December 26.

In 2020, Talash was hit by a roadside bomb set by Taliban in Paktika’s Sarobi district.He had lost four brothers during the Taliban war.

The report said that Taliban fighters were also accused of destroying the tomb of Mohammad Daud Daud Daud (a former governor, ex-police chief in northern Afghanistan’s Takhar province on December 17).

In 2011, Daud was murdered in a suicide attack by the Taliban in Takhar’s capital Taloqan.Daud was responsible for the surrender of thousands more Taliban fighters within Kunduz, following the 2001 US-led invasion.Jamiat-e Islami was his commander.This political-military Islamist organization opposed Taliban rule between 1996 and 2001.

Exiled Afghan journalist Bilal Sarwary claimed that Daud’s relatives have confirmed that Daud was murdered.The Taliban denied the claims.

The Taliban are also accused of having destroyed the grave of Colonel Azizullah Karwan during a blast that occurred in Paktika, a southeastern province on October 31.

In June 2018, Karwan was assassinated by the Taliban.Colonel in the Special Forces Unit of the Afghan National Police, he was his name.According to the report, he had been through dozens of Taliban assassinations.

Videos that showed damage to Ahmad Shah Massoud’s Panjshir Valley mausoleum, north of Kabul, were released in September.

This footage was taken shortly after Taliban had captured the valley in the mountains.

It is the site of some resistance that the Taliban managed to erect during early September.

Massoud was 20 years old when the vandalism occurred.

Massoud was a fighter against the Taliban during the 1990s.He also occupied Soviet forces during the 1980s.

Al-Qaeda militants dressed as journalists killed Massoud just days before the attacks on September 11.After a public outcry, Massoud’s mausoleum was rebuilt by the Taliban.

Anas Haqqani is the younger brother to Sirajuddin Haqqani who was appointed as Taliban Interior Minister.He urged Taliban fighters “get rid your personal revenge” and “get rid of all of your envy.”

The report stated that Haqani, in a speech on December 27, marking the 42nd anniversary Soviet’s invasion of Afghanistan, warned that the Taliban regime would collapse if they tried to use brute force.

He had stated that an infidel government was likely to survive, while an oppressive one will not.

On the same day another Taliban official spoke out about bombing Babrak Karmal’s tomb.He was the former President of the leftist Taliban and assumed power in 1979 after Soviet forces invaded Afghanistan.

Nazar Mohammad Muhammad Mutmaeen (head of the Taliban’s Olympic Committee) tweeted, “After capturing Mazar–e Sharif,” According to reports, he was referring to the 1997 destruction of Babrak’s grave by the Taliban, who briefly took over the city in northern Afghanistan.
