A member of the corporation had filed an ordinance requesting the name change on the basis of claims of “historical evidence” that the Taj Mahal was originally a Hindu temple.

However, due to the roar and the rumble of corporate executives shouting slogans, the issue could not be discussed.Mayor Navin Jain called the house to a halt indefinitely, despite not bringing the session into an orderly pace.

Although the Hindutva group was determined to push for the resolution but the BSP and Congress corporators resisted the resolution by claiming that the High Court and the Supreme Court had already rejected the petition.

Outside, various Hindutva groups continued yell slogans, while officials from the corporation tried to calm the angry residents of the house.

Senior BJP corporator Anurag Chaturvedi told IANS that the proposal was legally flawed and should not be pursued. The property is owned by the ASI and therefore only the Union government can take an action.

The tenure of the Agra Municipal Corporation comes to an end in November.Prior to the start of the elections political parties are trying to increase the stakes.

However the Agra tourism industry has offered to keep the status as it is.The new tourist season will begin on September 27.”Therefore efforts must be made to preserve peace and harmony” an official from the tourism sector said.
