St Xavier’s University faces social attack over teacher’s job being cut to swimsuit photos

Kolkata 16 Aug : Kolkata’s St Xavier’s University is facing social media storms after it was revealed was made viral last week that an assistant professor of the institution was forced to quit due to posting photos in swimming attire on Instagram and that too before she was admitted to the university.
After the story went widely circulated, she was even slapped with a defamation order by officials at the University, requesting damage compensation of around Rs.99 million based on the fact that her decision was an ‘unmotivated’, ‘desperate and dishonest attempt to restart a chapter that was closed which caused a huge and irreparable harm to the reputation of the university.

St Xavier’s University, a Jesuit university that was established in February 2017 is the post-graduation extension of Kolkata’s famous St Xavier’s College, which was established in the year 1860.

The college is located in Park Street in Kolkata, the campus of the university is in New Town on the northern part of Kolkata.

Recently, students of the university erected posters on the campus that explained the decision to make the assistant professor resign of the assistant professor, describing it as an expression of the patriarchal mindset of the university administration.

“I have been involved with the school for more than two years.The student’s union of the college or university was historically apolitical.

Students displayed posters on campus to protest against the authorities was not heard of in the past,” said a teacher of the college under the terms of anonymity.

A petition has been filed on this issue that is signed by more than 20,000 individuals such as psychologists, educators filmmakers and TV actors and other members of the civil society.

The petition has been sent to the Education Minister of the state Bratya Basu, who is seeking to intervene in the issue.

A campaign on social media has begun against the chancellor of the school, FR Felix Raj, on this issue, which has been endorsed and shared by thousands of people, including a number of former and current students of both the university and the college.

However despite the public outrage however, the members of the university’s governing board have abstained from reaching out to media outlets to explain their sides of the debate.
