Los Angeles, December 26, 2018 : .”Spider-Man: The Way Home” was the pandemic-era’s first movie to surpass $1 billion in global box office sales after “Star Wars: the Rise of Skywalker”, which is now out of production. The Tom Holland-directed third film of the Tom Holland-led Trilogy achieved this feat in spite the ever-lengthening shadows Omicron, the Covid-19 spike across North America, Europe and North America, but still has not been released in China (according to “Variety”).
This year, it is the highest-grossing movie, surpassing China’s “The Battle at Lake Changjin”, ($902M) and James Bond’s 25th film (“No Time to Die”), which grossed $774M globally.
According to “Variety”, Sony’s comic-book masterpiece has crossed the threshold in 12 days. This is a record time, and it tied 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens for third place.
The fastest films, 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War and 2019,’s Avengers: Endgame, were faster, achieving the desired tally in just 11 days and five days respectively.
Reporting the figures, “Variety” commented that these were huge box-office receipts in a period when many new movies (such as “The Matrix Resurrections”, “Sing 2,” and “The King’s Man”) are opening across the country to record ticket sales.
