New Delhi, Nov 29, : After Liang Jingkun’s round-of-16 match, a spectator shouted “yellow banana” at the World Championships in America, table tennis officials have pledged to “prevent racist incidents” according to the South China Morning Post. Chinese fans and state media responded to a Houston, Texas crowd member repeatedly chanting “yellow banana, yellow!” During the thrilling victory of sixth seed Liang over Liam Pitchford from the UK, which was 4-3.
World No.The World No.9 Liang managed to withstand a dramatic fightback by Pitchford, having led 3-1 in Friday’s men’s 1st tie.He was leading 8-4 in the final game when the fan began his chant in the middle of an action break.
According to the report, Pitchford, 15th in the rankings, had taken out a banana for him to eat.Liang went over and spoke to his coach as a few other fans joined the chant.
International Table Tennis Federation representatives gave an interview to Houston’s China Media Group, denouncing the incident.
According to the report, Steve Dainton, Group CEO at the ITTF, stated that “We received a complaint form the Chinese Table Tennis Association” and that he noticed something on one night.
“And as soon we received that complaint, along with the local organizers, we took this very, very seriously and started taking action,” he said.
