Spain decreases its energy use by 3.7 percent in the 1st week of strict measures

Madrid 18 August : The measures introduced by the Spanish government just a week ago to conserve energy have already resulted in an 3.7 percent decrease in demand for electricity, the Minister of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge Teresa Ribera said.
The primary measures restrict air cooling in public buildings, workplaces shops, commercial centers to 27 degrees as well as 25 degrees in restaurants and bars according to Xinhua news agency.

In the meantime the lights must be turned off in public structures and in windows of shops from 10 p.m.

The measures are designed to help Spain to meet the goal set by the European Commission of decreasing the consumption of gas by 7 percent between August 1 through March 31 of next year.

“Between the 1st and the second week of August, we’ve observed a decline of 3.7 percent in the consumption of electricity in our nation (.) and this can be attributed to a higher awareness in households and businesses about an ethical utilization of electricity,” stated Ribera .

“The response to the crisis has been extremely positive,” she said, noting that the society has to “make an effort to react in an unified way” to the crisis in energy.

Ribera noted that the reduction in energy consumption occurred in the middle of an extreme heatwave, which shows the fact that in Spain, “the tendency is evident in terms of unity in behaviour and understanding of the situation”.

In the midst of the scorching heat in Spain about 31,500 acres of woodland and scrubland were burned in the fire.

Two persons have died since the 17th of July.

A drought has lasted for months and severe heat that experts attribute to climate change, has been reported across the nation.
