New Delhi, Aug 16 : A day after the convicts in the notorious Bilkis Bano trial were freed, Congress chief Manish Tewari, on Tuesday reopened the issue of Sikh prisoners shackled in jails and demanded an uniformity in the scope of the remission policy.

“While some convicts are released after 15 years, others remain in prison for more than 30 years? A classic scenario– Sikh prisoners in jail for three years,” he said in tweet.

All 11 life-long convicts in the 2002 Bilkis Bano gang-rape trial and the murder of seven members of her family left on Monday of Godhra sub-jail, after the Gujarat government granted the release of these prisoners under its Remission policy.

A special CBI court in Mumbai had sentenced the accused to life in prison for the crime of murder and gang-rape of seven of the members of Bilkis Bano’s family on January 21, 2008.The Bombay High Court had later confirmed their conviction.

As per reports, the inmates spent over 15 years in prison and one of them presented the Supreme Court with a plea for early release.

The apex court had ordered the Gujarat government to study the issue of the remission of his sentence .Following this, the government set up an advisory committee.
