Fields Medal was widely considered the Nobel Prize for Mathematics and that has been broadly dominated by whites since it was instituted in 1936.Bhargava got this award for “developing powerful new methods in the geometry of numbers, which he applied to count rings of small rank and to bound the average rank of elliptic curves.”

According to the award citation, Bhargava’s work is “based both on a deep understanding of the representations of arithmetic groups and a unique blend of algebraic and analytic expertise’’

Born in 1974 in Canada, he grew up primarily in the US and spent some time in India. He has been teaching at Princeton since 2003.
