Serum Institute gets nod to export vaccines to COVAX

New Delhi : , Nov 22, 2012 – The COVAX program has granted the green light to the Serum Institute of India, a Pune-based manufacturer of vaccines, according to a source Monday.
SII has been allowed to export 50 million doses COVID-19 vaccination Covishield from the ministry to COVAX (an UN Global organization).

COVAX, which is led by Gavi and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations(CEPI), and the World Health Organization, aims to speed up the production and development of Covid vaccines.Covax was established to provide equitable global access to Covid-19 vaccinations following the Covid pandemic.

Official sources confirmed that the first shipment of vaccines was to be sent out to Mozambique and Tajikistan.Covishield will be exported by the SII to Bangladesh as part of COVAX.

Starting November 23, the Serum Institute will be able to export vaccines.

Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Health Minister had declared that India would resume exports of vaccines in the fourth quarter beginning October.

According to his statement, vaccine export would resume in order to fulfil India’s commitment towards COVAX according the slogan ‘Vasudhaivakutumbakam.

After a significant increase in Covid cases during its second vaccination wave, India ended the Covid-19 vaccine program in April.

India sold and donated nearly 100 million vaccines before the ban on exports.The Health Minister announced that India would resume vaccine exports in the Vaccine Maitri program.

However, the excess vaccine supply will be used by the World to meet its commitment to fight Covid-19.

India achieved 82% coverage of the first vaccine, but the coverage rate for the second dose is still below 60%.
