Toronto 9 Aug : Serena Williams won her first singles title in a year since winning the French Open with a first-round victory against the world’s No.57 Nuria Parrizas Diaz of Spain in Toronto.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion, whose long-awaited return from injury this year was ended in an early loss at Wimbledon and won 6-3 or 6-1 in less than two hours in the National Bank Open, DPA reports.This was the first time Williams, in only her second appearance of the year, won in a singles event after beating Danielle Collins at Roland Garros on June 4 2021.

Wimbledon champion Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina also won her first match since winning at the All England Club, although she required three hours to beat Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic 7-5 6-1, 6-7.

In the section for men, Finn Emil Ruusuvuori collected a big-name win on the opening day of the Canadian Open, defeating three-time grand slam champion Stan Wawrinka 6-3, 3-6 3-1, 7-6.
