“India ranked number 1 in 2017’s list of the 10 most insecure countries for basic sanitation facilities, with 56 percent of its population unable to access basic sanitation.According to the IFP, India’s lack of access to basic sanitation facilities is a major reason for its loss of over 5.2 percent of its annual GDP.This amount amounts to almost $106 billion.

“Yet the Swachh Bharat Mission ensured that there has been significant progress. It stated that India’s Swachh Bharat Mission will result in annual savings of 7.7% of GDP by 2023-24.This is despite the fact that India’s sanitation economy has increased by two-fold between 2017 and 2021.”

This was in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), which envision universal access to WASH services in all its member countries by 2030.
