New Delhi, Aug 24 : The world’s biggest cryptocurrency exchange Binance’s chief communications chief Patrick Hillmann has revealed that online scammers created an Deepfake profile of him and scammed cryptocurrency community members into going to online meetings with Hillmann.Deepfakes are video forged forgeries which make it appear that people are saying things that they never said.
In the past month, Hillmann received several online messages from people who thanked him for meeting with team members of the project to discuss possible opportunities to post their assets on Binance.com.
“This was a bit odd, as I don’t have any knowledge of or knowledge of Binance listings and I’ve never had a conversation with one of these individuals previously,” he said in a blog post.
It was revealed that an expert hacking group employed interviews with news media and TV shows over time to create a fake of him.
“Other than the 15 pounds I earned during Covid not being evident the fake was sufficiently refined to fool a number of highly intelligent cryptocurrency community members” Hillmann said.
Apart from this particular incident there’s been a recent increase in hackers posing as Binance executives and employees on platforms like Twitter, LinkedIn, Telegram among others.
“We are ready to protect our users and our entire ecosystem.
In the end, we have the most experienced and largest cybersecurity group in the business,” he mentioned.
Last year, a video effects expert created Deepfake videos and photos of Hollywood actor Tom Cruise that went viral on various social media platforms.
On TikTok the account @deeptomcruise has racked up hundreds of thousands of followers and likes.
The popular fake videos of Facebook CEO Zuckerberg and of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi became to the top of the charts in 2020.
