“Baiju Bawra” will be Bhansali’s fourth collaboration with Ranveer Singh and his second with Alia Bhatt. The film draws inspiration from a dhrupad musician from medieval India. It is actually a remake of the 1952 film of the same name, “Baiju Bawra.” However, Bhansali clarified that his version will have its own unique approach.

In an interview with Koimoi, Bhansali revealed that “Baiju Bawra” will be a musical film, featuring a total of 11 to 12 songs.

Unlike the original film, not all of these songs will be pure Hindustani classical compositions by the legendary music composer Naushad.Bhansali also mentioned that he has already prepared 5-6 songs for the movie.

Expressing his admiration for Naushad’s work in the original film, Bhansali said he couldn’t hope to compose songs like him or find a voice as remarkable as Mohammed Rafi.Nevertheless, he intends to create a version of “Baiju Bawra” that is relevant to our times and utilizes the available talent.Bhansali compared his approach to the film with his previous adaptation of “Devdas,” emphasizing the stark differences between his vision and the earlier version by Bimal Roy.

“Baiju Bawra” will be set against the backdrop of Mughal Emperor Akbar’s court. It will revolve around the life of Baiju, a young musician who challenges the renowned maestro Tansen to a musical duel in order to avenge his father’s death.Ranveer Singh will portray the character of Baiju, while Alia Bhatt is likely to play his love interest in the movie.

The original 1952 film starred Bharat Bhushan and Meena Kumari in the lead roles.

With this upcoming project, Sanjay Leela Bhansali aims to create a distinct and contemporary rendition of “Baiju Bawra,” while retaining the essence of the original story. The film promises to be a captivating musical experience, showcasing the talent of the cast and the director’s artistic vision.
