Samsung Develops Artificial Muscle Actuators For Immersive Vr, Ar

Samsung creates artificial muscle actuators that can be used in immersive VRand AR.

Seoul 14 Aug : Samsung Electronics has unveiled an ambitious augmented reality/virtual Reality (AR/VR) project that makes use of small artificial muscle actuators to facilitate quick imaging in AR/VR, as well as tactile feedback to VR controllers media reports claim.
According to SamMobile According to SamMobile, two of the biggest obstacles to VR/AR immersion is the absence of the ability to focus in a variety of ways and feedback from tactile.

A photo rendered inside the VR headset doesn’t alter the focus of objects based on the viewer’s line of sight. In the same way, VR and AR controllers do not have the tactile feedback and the ability to fool users into thinking that the virtual objects they happen to interact with have the weight of real objects.

In the case of VR or AR headsets there is a disconnection between what the eyes see and what the body is experiencing and how the brain interprets these interactions, and the differences between the senses.

However, Samsung may have come up with the solution to overcome these obstacles and increase the experience through the use of artificial muscles in the future VR/AR headsets.

Samsung’s engineers have designed a compact, high-power, and lightweight Compliant amplified SMA Actuator (CASA) made of Shape Memory Allow (SMA) according to the report.

The actuators weigh 0.22 grams, yet they have the highest tension of actuation of 300 percent under 80 grams of external payload. In other words Samsung’s artificial muscles actuators can lift payloads that are 800 times more powerful than their weight.

The technology presented by Samsung in a new Nature Communications paper achieves variable focus in a mixed reality helmet with these powerful, fast, and light-weight actuators that reduce the time between the user’s movement in focus and the events taking place on screen.

It all sounds futuristic.

The potential of the immersive VR as well as AR is appealing but there’s not much information about when and how this technology may be available in Samsung consumer products, the report stated.
