Centurion 26 December : .In the Test against India, South Africa’s players were seen sporting black armbands as a tribute to Archbishop Desmond Tutu who died in Cape Town at 90 on Sunday. Players from South Africa and India observed silence for a minute in memory of their world-famous statesman just before the national anthems played.The black armbands were not only worn by the South African umpires, but also Adrian Holdstock and Marais Erasmus, who were both wearing them.
South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed condolences on Tutu’s passing via Twitter.”The death of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu marks another moment of sorrow in the nation’s final farewells to an outstanding generation of South Africans that have left us a free South Africa.
“Desmond Tutu, a patriot unmatched; a leader in principle and pragmatic who provided meaning to the Biblical insight that faith is without works was dead.We pray for Archbishop Tutu to rest peacefully, but we also ask that his spirit guard the nation’s future.
Tutu is well-known for his anti-apartheid activism and human rights work.In 1984, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for nonviolent opposition to apartheid.
After South Africa’s 1994 first democratically elected President, Nelson Mandela was elected, Tutu also invented the term “Rainbow Nation” to describe South Africa after apartheid.
India won the toss at the start of the Test and chose to field first.
