After scientists discovered the new variant, Xinhua reported that the Coronavirus Command Council met to address the nation.

“We have seen an average 1,600 new cases per day over the past seven days, compared with 500 daily cases in previous week and 275 daily cases the week prior.

The President stated that the percentage of positive Covid-19 tests has increased from 2 to 9 percent in less than a week.

“This is an extreme increase in infections in a very short time.”

He said, “We know that this variant is responsible for most infections found in Gauteng over the past two weeks and is now spreading to all other provinces.”

Ramaphosa stated that only 35% of the adult population have been fully vaccinated and that there is still a lot to be done to make vaccines compulsory for public places like public transport, public events, and public facilities.

He said, “Government has established a working group that will consult extensively on the introduction compulsory vaccination in certain places and activities.”

The task force will report directly to the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Immunisation (chaired by Deputy President David Mabuza), which will make recommendations for the Cabinet.

He stated that vaccination is the most powerful tool mankind has.

He said, “Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and others against the Omicron variant. It helps reduce the impact on the fourth wave and restore the social freedoms that we all desire.”

“Vaccination is also essential to the return to full operation of our economy, to the resumption or recovery of vulnerable sectors such as tourism and hospitality, and to the resumption and normalization of travel.”

Ramaphosa stated that the Covid-19 virus can mutate and create new variants, as with all viruses.People who aren’t vaccinated are more likely to be exposed to more severe variants.

He said, “That is why I have joined many countries and organisations around the globe who have been fighting for equal vaccine access for everyone.”

“We have stated that vaccine inequalities not only cost lives and livelihoods in the countries that are denied access but also threaten global efforts to end the pandemic. The Omicron variant should be a wakeup call to the rest of the world.
