Ovsyannikova who has been fined several times due to her critique of Russia’s war against Ukraine is now facing a lengthy prison sentence.

According to Zakhvatov the house searches could be linked to the protest Ovsyannikova held last week in which she displayed a banner with the words “Putin is murderer, his soldiers fascists” in the centre of Moscow within the reach of the Kremlin.

With the stricter enforcement of the law, actions that undermine the Russian military could be punished with the possibility of a prison sentence of up to 15 years.

Ovsyannikova as an employee of Russian state television, had exhibited an antiwar poster in protest against the war in an on-air show in March.

It said: “Stop the war.Do not believe in the propaganda. You are being deceived here.”

The editor, who prior to then was believed to be faithful to the official position, was awarded world-wide acknowledgement for his work.

Following the incident, she lived abroad for some time and wrote for the German newspaper Die Welt.
