Russia sets up air defence systems at Ukrainian nuclear facility

Moscow 10 Aug : Russian forces have begun installing an air defence system at Europe’s biggest nuclear power station in Zaporizhzhya, in occupied Ukraine after shelling caused fears of an utterly catastrophic accident.
“The power plant’s air defense systems are being strengthened,” the head of the Moscow-appointed military administration in the region, Yevhen Balytskyi, told Russian state television on Tuesday.

The Russian military administration announced that the Zaporizhzhya plant is functioning normally, while the power lines as well as damaged units of the reactor have been fixed, according to the news agency dpa.

The nuclear power plant in the southern part of Ukraine that is under Russian control is being shelled multiple times in the past few days, raising international concern about the safety of the nuclear facilities.

Moscow as well as Kiev have blamed one another for the attacks.

Russia has indicated that it might consider an invitation by International Atomic Energy Agency monitors to the nuclear facility in the southern part of Ukraine.

“From our perspective, we’re prepared to offer the best assistance to solve any organisational problems,” the Russian Foreign Ministry stated on Tuesday.

Moscow also claimed that the UN of having cancelled an inspection trip already scheduled, leading to an increase in tension.
