Report Says Cash Taken By Ashraf Ghani While Fleeing Afghanistan Did Not Exceed $1 Mn

A report says that cash taken by Ashraf Ghani during his escape from Afghanistan was less than one million dollars

Kabul the 11th of August, : The final report of the transfer of funds made by the former Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani while he was fleeing the country was released by the US Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), media reports claimed.
According to the report this figure did not exceed $1 million, but could be more in worth to $500,000, Tolo News reported.

“Although SIGAR found that some cash was taken from the grounds of the palace and transferred to President Ghani’s helicopters for evacuation Evidence suggests that the amount was not more than $1 million, and could be more in the range of $500,000.The majority of the cash was believed to have been derived from various Afghan budgets for operating expenses of the government, which are typically managed by the palace,” the report read, Tolo News reported.

The report of SIGAR said that a significant amount of cash was hidden in government buildings which includes the offices of the national security and president and then disappeared.

“SIGAR also found unusual circumstances in which around $5 million in cash was left in the palace of the president.

A portion or all of the money was likely to belong to the president Ghani or the administration of the United Arab Emirates.A portion or all of it was also believed to have been part of the money that was divided between employees of the Presidential Protective Service after the helicopters had left, but prior to the Taliban took over the palace.” The report said, Tolo News reported.

SIGAR further stated that the former president Ashraf ghani refused to answer questions, and his lawyer was able to answer only six of the questions of 56.

“On March 14 2022, SIGAR sent 56 written questions to President Ghani through his lawyer regarding these allegations of theft and other issues that pertain to SIGAR’s congressionally mandated investigation of the Afghan government’s collapse.On July 28th, 2022, via his lawyer President Ghani gave answers to only six of the 56 questions,” according to the report.

SIGAR began its investigation following the accusation of Ashraf Ghani by the Russian Embassy of transferring millions of dollars during the time he left Afghanistan.
