Ransomware targets the elderly and youth who are victims to Instagram scams: Report

New Delhi, Nov 24, : Hackers are targeting seniors and middle-aged people with ransomware, while young adults fall prey to various scams on popular apps such as Instagram and TikTok according to a global report released Wednesday.
Cyber security company Avast discovered that most people aged 65 and over and those between 25 and 35 primarily use their laptops or desktop computers to go online.

This makes them vulnerable to ransomware and tech support scams, spyware/Trojans and Botnets.

People between the ages of 25-34, 35-44, and 18-24 years olds use smartphones to go online (87 percent each), making them targets for adware and mobile banking Trojans, FluBot SMS scams spreading malware, downloader and FluBot SMS scams spreading malware, as well as Instagram, TikTok scams promoting adware and Fleeceware.

The report says that both older and younger generations are targets of phishing attacks and romance frauds across all devices.It is part of a global study by YouGov on digital citizenship trends.

Jaya Baloo (Civilcriminals) said that cybercriminals often consider how younger and older generations use different devices for targeted attacks.They adapt them to current cultural usage trends to make sure they hit the mark,” Jaya Baloo, Chief Information Security Officer at Avast.

According to Avast Threat Labs data in 2021, the company blocked an average of 1.46 million ransomware attacks per month on desktops.

Between January and April, there were 5.9 Million attempts to commit tech support scams worldwide each month.

Mobile banking Trojans (9.7%) and adware (59%), the top threats to mobile devices in Q3, were the top three threats.Downloaders (7.9%) are malicious apps that use social engineering techniques to trick victims into installing other unwanted or malicious apps.

The report stated that FluBot was also spreading on mobile devices in most countries, including India.Avast blocked 3,500 monthly attacks in August and September of this year.

This is in addition to the 35,000 global attacks that were blocked per month on average in Q3.

Social media is the most important internet activity for those aged 35-44 (36%)

For 55-64-year-olds, it’s banking (38%) and then video calling with friends and relatives (32%).

The report stated that this shows why scams on Instagram, TikTok and FluBot SMS are targeting these generations.It also revealed that email phishing scams appear to have come from friends or mobile banking Trojans.

“Different generations might see the internet differently and have different online experiences,” stated Baloo.
