By Ashis Ray London 8th September : Prince Charles, age 73, who was the heir to the crown for a period of 70 years – the longest in the history of the countryis now the heir to the British throne.
The change occurred immediately after his mother, Queen Elizabeth II who died in 96 after serving as the monarch since 1952, which was more than Queen Victoria’s reign of 63 years.Victoria was monarch until 1901.
Elizabeth was also the Queen of Canada, Australia and New Zealand, among other territories.
“The Queen is gone.Live long, King.” It has been the British tradition for centuries, even though there is a need of the official coronation ceremony to complete the ascension.
Elizabeth passed away in Balmoral Castle in Scotland, one of her four royal residences, and possibly her favorite.
Families from near and far had gathered to be by her side in her last moments.
In addition to Charles his older son William who is the in the next in succession Charles’s sister Anne and brothers Andrew and Edward and his wife Camilla were also present.
William’s younger brother Harry who lives in the United States, was to attend a party in London however, he cancelled his plans to attend a gathering with the rest of the family at Balmoral. It was not clear if his wife Meghan was with him.The couple has been separated from their family members for a long time.
Elizabeth was extremely popular with her people and was popularly regarded and respected by them.
This made the British monarchy popular in the sense of its concept as well as a rebuttal to republicanism.
The same cannot be said of Charles who, despite the fact that he has an chance to show his worth and gain the trust of British citizens.
A YouGov survey put Charles his popularity with his fellow British population at 42 percent, with 24 per cent disliking him , and 30 per cent of the population being neutral. He is a constant environmentalist for decades, long before it was fashionable to discuss it.He also supports organic food and traditional architecture.
There is a debate as to whether Charles will automatically become the head of the Commonwealth.
However, this was decided by the top leaders of the 53-nation group and India’s approval of this decision. He has in fact been a presiding official on behalf of Elizabeth in Commonwealth Heads of Government Meetings and the summit that was held earlier this year in Rwanda.
In 1952, when Elizabeth’s father George VI died in 1952 however, it was not by any way set in the stone that she would take over the position of her father in the Commonwealth realm. The term of George as the head of the Commonwealth was for the duration of his life.
However the remarkable telegram sent by the then Indian Premier Jawaharlal Nehru resolved the issue. In his message of congratulations to Elizabeth on her father’s passing, he also congratulated her for succeeding him as the head of the Commonwealth.
Because of his stature in the world at large, the member states of the Commonwealth were in accordance with his sentiments.
