New Delhi, Nov 27 : Congress General Secretary and Punjab in-charge Harish Rawat has said that the situation in Punjab may worsen as it is a sensitive state and the Union government should address the farmers’ concerns immediately to defuse the tension even as the farmers have been allowed to congregate at Burari in the national capital.
“We along with Chief Minister and our leadership are concerned about the situation in the state because the BJP is doing politics on the issue and trying to create a wedge between farmers and other people in the state”.
“Punjab is a sensitive state bordering Pakistan, so we don’t want that peace should be disturbed,” Rawat said
Speaking to IANS in an interview he said: “The farmers agitation is the first such agitation where political parties are following the footsteps of farmers as the farmers were the first to raise their voice as soon as the ordinance was issued.”
The farmers knew that MSP is in danger and they fear that public distribution system may also be withdrawn, so they started coming out in protest.The farmers apprehend that when the PDS is withdrawn, there will be no demand for their products.The consumer will also be at receiving end.The Congress leader alleged that the divorce between Akali Dal and BJP is staged as the BJP is trying to do politics and trying to make inroads in urban areas and have asked the Akalis to focus on rural voters.
Some 500 farmer organisations from six states — Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan and Kerala — had planned the November 26-27 march for two months to pressure the central government to repeal the recently enacted farm laws.
Rawat said that farmers are only demanding that the law be amended and MSP clause be inserted, “The farmers are up against the three laws enacted by the Union government.”
The Congress leader said he had no role in the Sidhu-Amarinder luncheon meet and they both decided to meet on their own showing their large hearts and will thank both of them for coming together on the issue of farmers.
The Congress leader, who was former Chief Minister of Uttrakhand, batted for the Kumbh mela in Haridwar to be held on time and said that the government must start the registration process of devotees soon and give a staggered schedule for devotees.“Organising kumbh is no big deal, where there is a will there is a way”
