Chennai 11th of September : Legendary musician and former Beatles member Sir Paul McCartney has requested Indian Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav to immediately take action to transport the abused elephant Jeymalyatha (also called Joymala) to an appropriate rescue centre. The message from the world-renowned music icon was in favor of the petition of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India and two video clips of an elephant screaming in the pain of being beaten by mahouts, the videos went viral.
In his letter McCartney stated: “I have thought of India as a place of spirituality ever since my first trip there in the 1960s.I was amazed by the Indian culture’s love for animals.I know that India loves elephants as the national animal of its heritage however cruelty to animals is everywhere even in India.”
“What says about a nation’s values is the way in which the brutality is dealt with .So, I am certain that the necessary steps will be taken to take the elephant that is so badly abused Jeymalyatha (Joymala) to an appropriate rescue centre where she can receive the specialist treatment she requires for her psychological injuries and live free from chains and in the presence of other animals of her species.”
PETA India had recently submitted an inspection report of veterinary health regarding Jeymalyatha’s health, which was conducted on July 27, to Forest Department officials in Tamil Nadu and Assam.
The report states that the mahout’s current use the pliers on her skin, even in the presence of inspectors.PETA, in its report said that the mahout had prohibited inspectors to not take still photos and video footage, however they did document the condition of the elephant.
The checkpoint, it should be noted, was carried out after two viral videos surfaced in the same month, one in June 2022 , and another in February 2021.of Jeymalyatha being beat by mahouts of various kinds and screaming in pain.
