Unusual stories are also making an inroad into mainstream cinema.Pankaj Tripathi’s meteoric rise was a sign of the changing tastes and preferences of cinemagoers.

This actor is equally adept in mainstream and middle of road cinema.Films like “Masaan”, “Gangs of Wasseypur”, “Newton”, and “Bareilly Ki Barfi” and many others are testament to this fact.

The actor talked about how audiences have changed their perceptions of our stories, and blurred lines between parallel and mainstream cinema. His statement was, “I believe the boundaries between mainstream cinema and parallel cinema will continue to blur and that is a sign of the growth and evolution in our audience. They are now open for a wide range of topics.”

The internet is responsible for creating a new generation of content, he said.”Because the audience can now access a lot more content and they have now the option to see content from all over the world. Many new writers and directors are entering the media, and they’re pushing the boundaries with their creativity. We have been able to explore different stories through the evolution of our audience, which has allowed us to be bold creatively adventurous.”

He then talks about his high school, the National School of Drama.NSD is Asia’s largest acting institute. It was founded with the goal of increasing the number of theatres in the country.

However, plays are only available in English and Hindi. This makes it difficult for students from far-flung areas.

The actor responds to the question by using an analogy.

Pankaj said, “See, doctors can learn medicine in Hindi or English, but they have to apply, practice, and talk to patients in the local language.” The same applies to NSD, which can easily be learned in Hindi or English. The artist then has the ability to use this skill in his native language.

Ratan Thiyam is an NSD alumni who has performed plays in Manipur for many years and has helped to strengthen the Manipur theater ecosystem through his work.

He does acknowledge that language barriers can be a problem for some actors.”I think that an actor may face difficulties in the beginning due to the language.I have a memory of Abdul Qadir who was brilliant but didn’t get any meaty roles because he was not fluent in Hindi.

He was still learning the skills, but it wasn’t difficult for him to perform onstage. He eventually got over it and performed well.

NSD has now established regional centers across the country, I believe. The teaching method will include native languages when students learn theatre acting and stagecraft in regional centres.

NSD was founded when there were 20 students in 20 states,” he stated.
