Pak to expand forests to fight climate change: president

Islamabad 18 August : Pakistan President Arif Alvi announced on Thursday that his government was trying to increase the forests in the country to combat the negative effects of climate change.
“Rising mercury levels result in melting glaciers as well as urban flooding in Pakistan,” Alvi stated in his message to the occasion of the launch of the monsoon-related national tree planting campaign.

He stated that concerted efforts are required to establish extensive plantations in the hope of securing the nation from the devastating impacts of the climate change.

The President stated that a nation must have 25 percent forest cover according to international standards, however Pakistan just has 4.8 percent.

Alvi stated that the vast plantation would not just help the country in tackling the effects of climate change but also protect the wildlife, flora and fauna.

To increase the area of forest, Pakistan under its 10 Billion Tree Tsunami program has planted 1.81 billion trees as of June 2022.A total of 3.29 billion trees are expected to be planted by 2023 according to the President.

According to the Ministry of Climate Change, more than 300 million saplings will be planted in the ongoing monsoon tree plantation campaign.
