New Delhi, December 14, 2018 : .The Lok Sabha took up Tuesday the Supplementary Demands For Grants, 2nd Batch, 2021-22.
This includes an equity infusion of Rs 62,000 crore into Air India and fertilizer and food subsidies.It also contains the Mahatma Ghandi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. Shashi Tharoor, a Congress member, said, “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan,” isn’t the era of this government.It is “Na Jawan Na Kisan,” which is neither Jawan nor Kisan.
He expressed concern about the economic state post-Covid-19 and held that demonetization was responsible for the decline in the economy.
Tharoor said, “While we all applauded the heroic efforts of our healthcare workers,” but the truth is that the government’s policy decisions were shortsighted and the economy ended up in uncertainty.
While debating the Grants issue, Nishikant Dubey of Bharatiya Janata Party listed the accomplishments of the National Democratic Alliance government.He stated that Railways today is in competition with budget airlines because the Modi government placed the Railway Budget under its Financial Budget shortly after coming to power.
Every year, the Railway Ministry receives adequate funding to expand the railway infrastructure.In the seven last years, nearly 90 percent of electrification work for the Railways was completed.It will soon be 100 percent.The country is thriving because of the availability of funding.
The poor policies of the UPA government had led to Air India’s demise.This was highlighted in his CAG report.
He also pointed out that the Comptroller and Auditor General of India reports criticized the merger of Indian Airlines and Air India as a disastrous move.In the CAG report, he also detailed how Air India was given so-called bailout packages that ultimately turned out to be a waste of taxpayers money.
Dayanidhi Maran, an ADMK member, blamed government officials for Air India’s losses.He claimed that it was impossible to turn a PSU into a profitable business in seven years.
He asked the Air India bidders who were present during the auction.
Maran recalls how LPG cylinders were launched under the “Give Up Subsidy”, and that the subsidy for cooking gas now is Rs 12.He said that while earlier only women would cry when cooking was done, the subsidy on cooking gas now covers all members of the family.
He claimed that the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code was fraud.
While the nationalised banks face losses, the corporates benefit from the unbelievable haircuts.
Saugata Ray, the TMC’s Saugata said that the Tata Group had begged for Air India to be taken over by the government.

“We have seen how lakhs of workers were forced to trudge to their villages during the lockdown and when they reached their home now they have to buy fertilizers and other agricultural stuff at higher prices,”, Pandey said, adding that the funds for MNREGA have been reduced year by year.
He said that now India stands at the 100th position in the World Hunger Index while only Rs 5 is being spent on nutritional food for school children under the Mid Day Meal programme.
J&K’s NC Member Hasnain Masoodi charged that the government is propagating a fake narrative that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir has completely changed.The government says that the situation has substantially improved after the August 5, 2019 abrogation of Article 370 and 35 A but the reality can been seen in the attacks on the security forces in the Union Territory and the killings of civilians, he added.
He said that the local bodies elected Members are forced to stay under police protection and are not able to even meet their electorate.
Masoodi said that crores of rupees have been given to the Tatas but funds in MNREGA have been reduced for J&K.There are power cuts and no drinking water in the majority of the Union Territory despite the claim that tap drinking water connections have been provided under the Jal Jeevan Mission.
The debate remained inconclusive and will be taken up again on December 15.
