Oppn issues adjournment notice for Doklam and AFSPA

New Delhi, Dec 8, 2008 : Congress MP Manish Twari gave Wednesday’s adjournment notice to the Lok Sabha regarding Doklam. In Rajya Sabha Manoj K Kumar Jha of RJD under rules 267 issued suspension notice for repealing AFSPA.
Tewari’s notice states, “The Sino-Bhutan Memorandum of Understanding regarding the three-step resolution of border disputes is a matter of grave concern to India because it could lead to Doklam’s strategically important territory being transferred to China.” This transfer would be a threat to India’s Siliguri Corridor, which connects the northeastern states of India and the mainland. This is why I ask that the House address this urgent matter of national safety.

Manoj Kumar Jha, under rule 267, gave suspension of business notice to the Rajya Sabha for discussion of the repeal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act.

With the killing of civilians in Nagaland, security forces have made the issue of AFSPA controversial.

On Tuesday, the Nagaland government met for the first time in its cabinet meeting.

This was after the December 4 shooting by security forces left 14 civilians dead, and 30 others injured. The government urged the central government to withdraw the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958, (AFSPA) from the country.

Following the cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Neiphiu Brazil, Planning and Parliamentary Affairs minister Neiba Kronu stated that the cabinet had decided to write to Centre to immediately repeal AFSPA.
