New Delhi, Nov 29, : .Only 1.73 percent of the 7,67,419 km of forest aea in India (RFA) is under encroachment.Madhya Pradesh (and Assam) are the most affected, the Parliament was informed Monday.
Ashwini Kumar Choubey, Minister of State, Environment, Forest and Climate Change, responded to a question on encroachment by Lok Sabha members Chandra Prakash Joshi and Nihal Chand Chand Chauhan.

“The state/UT responsible for the protection and management of forests are primarily responsible.

He stated that the Ministry had written to the concerned state governments/UT administrations to request that they remove any encroachment according to the existing rules and ensure that there is no further encroachment.

Choubey said that the UTs and states take various measures to prevent and control encroachments.

These include digitizing and demarcating forest boundaries, strengthening forest protection infrastructure, and involving fringe forest communities through Joint Forest Management Committees and Eco Development Committees.

According to the India State of Forest report 2019 (ISFR), 7,67,419 sq kilometers of RFA were covered.

This included protected forest (4,34,853 kms), reserved forest (4,38,924 kms) and unclassed forests (1,13,642 km).Madhya Pradesh (94.689 sqkm), Maharashtra (66.1,579 sqkms), Odisha (66.1,204 sqkm), Chhattisgarh (59.5772 sqkm) and Arunachal Pradesh (51.1407 sqkm) were the states with the highest areas under RFA.

According to the Ministry’s data, Madhya Pradesh (5417.31 sqkm) and Assam (3631.42 sqkm) were the states with the highest encroachments.Karnataka (830.92 square km), Arunachal Pradesh (534.50 square km) and Andhra Pradesh (343.58 km) followed.
