Odisha CM announces social insurance benefits for newspaper hawkers

Bhubaneswar : , Tuesday, Nov 30, 2010: Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik announced social security benefits to newspaper hawkers in the state on Tuesday.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), all newspaper hawkers who are registered with the Odisha Unorganised Workers Welfare Board will be eligible for social security assistance.

In the event of accidental death, Rs 2 lakh will be paid to the next of kin.Natural death will receive Rs 1 lakh.

The statement stated that newspaper hawkers who are completely disabled by an accident will receive Rs 1.5 lakh, Rs 80,000 for loss of one limb and Rs 40,000 for the loss of both.

In light of the Covid-19 situation, the Chief Minister also announced special assistance in two phases of Rs 3,000 to all registered newspaper sellers.

The Chief Minister’s Relief Fund will pay the assistance.

The government also plans to build work-sheds at the district level for hawkers.Patnaik directed the Information and Public Relations department, to create a digital database of hawkers and issue them identity cards.

CMO stated that the announcement was made to acknowledge the important role of newspaper hawkers in information dissemination among the public.
