Not Fair To Give Fewer Tests To South Africa, Says Pace Spearhead Anrich Nortje

Unjust to deny lesser tests for South Africa, says pace spearhead Anrich Nortje

London 15 August : South Africa pace leader Anrich Nortje has been critical of the International Cricket Council (ICC) for allowing fewer Test matches for his nation in the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. He said that getting only six games in the same year, while other teams are playing 15 is unjust.
Dean Elgar’s team will begin their three-Test series against Ben Stokes’ England at Lord’s on the 17th of August, hoping to score maximal points in order to secure the right place in the WTC Final scheduled next year.

South Africa are marginally ahead of Australia at the top of the WTC rankings with 71.43 percentage points. They also, despite playing more games and playing less games, are in the top position to be a contender in the 2023 final.

“If we have to play six (Tests) in a year and you guys (England) play 15 in an entire year, I do not consider this as fair.” Nortje, who will play a major position in the series of three tests against England said to Daily Mail.

“Our players aren’t likely to get as much attention and respected as previous generations If we play 18 games in three years, or something similar to this,” he added.

The fast bowler, who is 28 years old, demanded that the cricket authorities give his country the amount of Tests that are appropriate to the status it currently enjoys.

South Africa have got fewer chances than the big three of England, India and Australia.

“We are determined to be the number.one team in every format. It’s unfortunate that it’s been played out, but we are eager to be a part of the story. It would be great to be in a position to play more test cricket and not only a two-match series” he added.

The difference in the figures can be seen in the fact that South Africa have played 26 Tests in the last four years, whereas England and India have played 53 and 41 games , respectively.

Australia was the only one to leave the country during over 18 months of Covid isolation has also played 34 tests.

With bilateral series that do not include the three cricket-paying nations that are not a profitable proposition It is believed that the Proteas miss the chance to play more Tests.

South Africa have only two home Tests scheduled in the first two of the four seasons of the next Future Tours Programme (FTP).

“The players are enthusiastic and eager to take part in Test cricket,” said Nortje.”We’re eager to play and are eager to be here, and to go against each other with one of the top teams in the world at this point.”
