Chennai, Nov 30, : , With water levels reaching the 142 feet mark, authorities raised nine 13 shutters at the Mullaperiyar dam Tuesday. According to authorities, five shutters were raised 60 cms.The remaining four shutters were raised 30 cms to drain excess water from the Periyar river.
Even though Tamil Nadu authorities resumed tunnel discharge Sunday evening, they also raised one shutter except for shutter V3, which has been open since November 23, and water levels rose to 141.9 feet by Monday night.
After heavy rains on Monday night, water levels rose and forced the authorities to release excess water.
Residents living downstream were alerted to the development and advised not to return.
The Tamil Nadu government manages the British-era masonry gravity dam, despite it being geographically located in Kerala.
The dam is at center of a dispute between the states.Kerala wants to build a new dam, while Tamil Nadu opposes it.
