NHRC hosts a public hearing to hear complaints about human rights from three NE states

Shillong (Dec 14th, 2008) Officials from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), began a two-day public hearing on Tuesday about complaints related to human rights violations in the three Northeastern States of Meghalaya Mizoram, Tripura and Tripura.
Justice M.M., a member of the NHRC, led the hearing.Kumar presided over the hearing of 19 cases related to these three states.

Official statement stated that “The cases will be heard in the presence and concern of the complainants so that decisions can be taken immediately for the redressal or grievances of victims of violations of human rights.”

On Wednesday, the Commission will meet with human rights defenders and NGOs to discuss human rights issues and other concerns in three Northeastern countries.

The Commission will also inform the media of the results of the public hearing.

NHRC Members D.M.Mulay and Rajiv Jain, Secretary General Bimbadhar Pradhan and other senior officials of the commission and state government attended the hearing.

The NHRC has been organising ‘Open Hearing and Camp Sittings’ in different states of the country since 2007 and has so far held about 40 such sittings and hearings with the objective of quick disposal of cases and to sensitise and create awareness about human rights at the grassroots.

Due to the Covid-19 guidelines and restrictions, the Commission could not hold any camp after the sitting in Raipur (Chhattisgarh) in February last year, the statement said.
