The President stated that maintaining peace and tranquility in the region is crucial, not only for India, but for the whole global community.

“India is a maritime nation, and our navy has a huge part to play in advancing our foreign policy and protecting our national interests.

It has successfully protected our vast maritime interests with resolve, tenacity,” stated President Kovind.

India has an opportunity to play a pivotal part in the Indo-Pacific Region’s emerging geopolitical challenges.

As one of the largest navies in this region, it has made significant efforts to meet all regional commitments and improve relations with its partners in the Indo-Pacific Region.

In the presence of Governor Bhagat Sing Koshyari, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R.Hari Kumar, the President spoke while presenting the coveted “President’s Standard to 22nd Mittle Vessel Squadron” here.

The President stated that the timing of the honour was perfect as the nation is celebrating “Swarnim Vijay Varsha” and serves as a testament to the extraordinary services rendered by the past and current officers and sailors of the squadron during its five-decades-long journey.

The glorious history of the squadron began in 1970 with 8 OSAI class ships from the USSR.These ships are well-known for their speed and firepower and played a vital role in the 1971 War in the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea.

Operation Trident and Operation Python witnessed the sinking of Pakistani naval vessels on the western seaboard. The Indian Navy was able to deal a devastating blow to the enemy power.

Similar to the above, fifty years ago, the Squadron ships set ablaze Karachi harbour. This crippled the enemy morale and forced a blockade of Karachi.Total sea control was achieved.Although these ships were originally acquired for shore defense, they became the most potent offensive strike force.

The highly decorated and honored Killer Squadron was made possible by the introduction of the Prabal and Veer classes of ships, which were built in India.

President Kovind stated that he considers the Indian Navy’s commitment to Chhatrapati Shivaji Mahraj, who is widely regarded as the founder of India’s battle-ready naval force in 17 centuries.

The Supreme Commander of Armed Forces also mentioned how the Indian Navy has assisted people in humanitarian crises or natural disasters within the country and abroad, such as the repatriation from other countries of Indians during Covid-19’s pandemic or the rescue operations during Cyclone Taukte’s week-long destruction in May 2021.
