Plenary meeting of the N.Korea ruling Party discusses rural development

Seoul, December 29, : , North Korean leader Kim Jong Un presided over the second day session of the key party plenary.The purpose was to talk about rural development in the context of the country’s efforts to address its economic woes.
According to North Korea’s Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim discussed Tuesday night “medium- and long-term strategies for rural development and main tasks in achieving the grand objective of rural development in accordance with realistic conditions and the requirements of the times”.

North Korea held the 4th Plenary Meeting at the 8th Central Committee of its ruling Workers Party on Monday.

This was amid hopes Pyongyang would unveil new policies on foreign affairs and the economy for the coming year.

The KCNA stated that Tuesday’s meeting was about “rural issues” and that Kim adopted “important revolutionary steps”.

However, it did not elaborate on exactly what these were.

The report stated that the new program for socialist rural construction received full approval and support from the participants.

North Korea calls for “facelifting” in order to “build a strong country”.

Kim visited Samjiyon in the northwest, where there is a large development project.

Kim called Samjiyon a “picturesque unit in rural buildingup” that was a beginning point for “making the local people witness a leaping progression to highly civilized material life and culture”.

The North places emphasis on rural development as it struggles with crippling sanctions, protracted pandemic-driven closures of borders and other obstacles.

According to government data, the country’s economy has shrunk by 4.5 percent in 2020, compared with 0.4% growth one year ago.
