N. Korea imprisons UN Human Rights Council for imposing arbitrary standards

Seoul, November 20, : , The North Korean foreign ministry criticized Saturday’s UN Human Rights Council decision to adopt “arbitrary” Western standards in order to undermine its human rights situation.
According to the ministry, UN Council’s approval of resolutions on human rights “targets certain countries,” which goes against UN Council’s purpose of dealing with human rights in an “fair and equal” way.

The UN Human Rights Council is now a platform for identifying independent and developing countries under the Western standards,” the ministry stated in a statement on its website.

This observation was made after Wednesday’s Third Committee of the UN General Assembly passed a resolution denouncing North Korea’s 17th consecutive year of human rights violations.

According to the ministry, special reporters on North Korean human right situations were selected by member countries without any discussion.

Tomas Ojea Quintana is an Argentinian lawyer who has held the same position since 2016.

The document also stated that the US and all other Western countries should cease “coercion and” “tyranny” in order to increase human rights “in their true meaning.”

Since 2005, the UN has passed such a resolution regarding North Korea’s human right problem. The UN General Assembly will forward the resolution to its plenary session next month.

South Korea did not participate in the Resolution for the Third Year in a Row.This was an apparent attempt to not antagonize its quiet neighbour, and instead revive a dialog mood.
