Johannesburg, Dec 8, 2008 : The Chairperson of South African Medical Association (SAMA), said that most patients infected by the Omicron variant Covid-19 had mild symptoms, while those who were not vaccinated showed severe symptoms. Angelique Cootze has treated 70 patients with the new variant.
Xinhua reported that she has seen most patients with mild symptoms like headaches, body aches, and sore throats in the past two weeks.
These symptoms are different to the Delta variant, she said, even though it is possible for this to change as cases rise.
“Omicron is a different animal. She said that there is no loss of taste or smell, and there is no need to breathe oxygen at this stage.”This variant is more in muscle.”
Cootze stated that the new variant’s symptoms were worse for patients who have not been vaccinated.
“Unvaccinated people experienced severe fatigue and other symptoms that were very intense.”
Monday’s report by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) reported 6,381 new Covid cases and 9 related deaths in South Africa within the last 24 hours.
Recently, Joe Phaahla, Health Minister, stated that the new variant is responsible for the rise in cases.
