Rabat, November 27, : Morocco has placed travel restrictions on South African and neighboring countries’ passengers due to concerns about a new Covid-19 variant. According to a statement issued by the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday, the travel ban applies to South Africa, Botswana and Namibia, Lesotho (Eswatini), Mozambique, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Lesotho.
According to Xinhua news agency, the ministry stated that passengers from these countries or transiting through them are not permitted to enter Morocco.
It explained that the decision was taken “to preserve Morocco’s achievements regarding the management of the Covid-19 pandemic” and to deal with the “deterioration in the health situation in certain countries”.
Scientists have recently identified a new Covid-19 variant, B.1.1.529, in South Africa.This new variant could be able to evade the immune system and make it more transmissible.
Friday’s report by the Moroccan Ministry of Health revealed 154 new Covid-19-related infections.This brings the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in North Africa to 949,532.
