Mohammed Shami’s denial of selection for the 2022 Asia Cup: is it really a surprise or is it?

New Delhi, Aug 10 : One of the biggest discussion points that have emerged out of India’s squad announcements for the Asia Cup 2022, starting on the 27th of August in the UAE was the non-selection of the pacer Mohammed Shami.
In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel due to injuries, many had expected Shami to take on the new-ball role on the pitches of Dubai and Sharjah.

However, with India remaining with the pace choices in Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan, and all-rounder Hardik Pandya Many were left ‘astonished about Shami not being able to find a spot in the squad that is the base for the Indian squad that will compete in the men’s T20 World Cup in Australia in October and November.

“In my squad, Shami was literally there.

If I were the chairman of the selection committee I believe Shami could have been in the team,” declared Krishnamachari Srikkanth who was a former India cricketer and former chairman of the selection committee on the Follow the Blues show on Star Sports, minutes after the Asia Cup squad was revealed.

To start, Shami hasn’t played a T20I for India since they fell out of the Super 10 stage of the Men’s T20 World Cup in the UAE in the year 2000.

Following this, India have played Bumrah, Harshal, Bhuvneshwar, Avesh, Arshdeep, Deepak Chahar, Mohammed Siraj, Umran Malik and Shardul Thakur as options for pace in T20Is (including Pandya) however, Shami hasn’t received an opportunity to play.

It could be a result of with Shami’s performance in T20Is.

It haven’t been quite as spectacular as his Tests or ODIs numbers. In 17 T20Is Shami has taken 18 wickets with an average of 31.55 and an economy rate of 9.54 This is more than his IPL average and economy rates of 29.19 and 8.52.

His IPL numbers were not the most impressive until the this season, with wickets in single digits and with an economy rate that is consistently higher than eight, nine or even exceeding 10.He has taken 19 wickets of 20 and 19 in IPL 2019 2020, 2021 and 2019 with economy rates of 8.68., 8.57 and 7.50 respectively.Shami then played in the T20 World Cup and picked six wickets in five matches with an average of 23.33 and an economy rate of 8.84.

This was after he was unable to score a wicket against Pakistan and New Zealand, where bowling second was a challenge because of the dew that was forming later in the second innings.Six wickets were taken in two three-wicket wins against Afghanistan and Scotland but by that point India’s journey to the semi-finals was almost over.

Although Shami was a stark call to mind of his ball abilities in Gujarat Titans’ run to IPL 2022’s trophy, he was their top wicket-taker (20 wickets with an economy rate of 8) It appears that the Indian selectors have removed him from having a role in the T20I scheme of things.

Shami was also averaging 11 wickets in power-play with an economy rate of just 6.62, which was the highest pick by bowlers in IPL 2022, alongside Chennai Super Kings’ left-arm pacer Mukesh Choudhary. In the pitch of IPL 2022 where bowlers received some assistance, Shami was a standout with his lengths and lengths that did not let batters fall free.

However, India has powerplay options in Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar and Arshdeep also entering the picture too.In the wake of Chahar back from a series of injuries and being announced as a backup player for the Asia Cup 2022, there is no opening for Shami.

In the dying overs stage, Shami has proved to be very costly.Over the past five innings of IPL, Shami has an economy rate of 10.56 which is only a fraction of the death overs rate in T20Is of 10.66.Furthermore, he is not a major player with the bat in T20Is.

In discussing his records in Australia in which hitting hard on the deck is generally preferable, Shami has played just one T20I in the country at Manuka Oval, Canberra in 2020.In that match, he was wicketless and gave up 46 runs in the four overs he played with an average rate of 11.50.

While his ODI and test records in Australia is impressive with 22 wickets in 14 matches and 31 scalps in eight matches however it might not be enough to allow Shami to be able to settle his case to play in the T20 World Cup, when he was not able to make the Asia Cup squad.
