By Santosh Kumar Pathak New Delhi, Aug 7 : For Jagdeep Dhankhar, winning in the Vice Presidential poll was easy But his biggest challenge is to handle the tension in the Rajya Sabha.
As chairman of the Rajya Sabha — the Upper House of Parliament -running the House smoothly, following the time he takes the oath will require all of his management abilities.
The term of the Vice President Venkaiah Naidu will end on the 10th of August.Dhankhar is scheduled to take over as the Vice President of the country on August 11.According to the plan, the Monsoon Session of Parliament is scheduled to end on the 12th of August however, should the session of Parliament do not end before the time scheduled then Dhankhar as Chairman of Rajya Sabha can conduct the proceedings of the Upper House for the last two days of the current session.
In light of the ongoing battle between the opposition and the government both inside and outside the Parliament It is thought that Dhankhar as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha will realise in the first two days the level of difficulty in managing the House and the attention of the entire nation will be focused on him.
In the Rajya Sabha, the NDA has not yet secured the majority.This is the reason the opposition appears more aggressive as opposed to in the Lok Sabha.
It was also evident that during the Monsoon Session, the opposition parties in the Rajya Sabha were constantly trying to take on the government the issue of increased GST rates for food products, the rise in inflation, and the misuse of Central investigation agencies.In the last few sessions, there were incidents of anger, suspension of MPs in the Rajya Sabha and sit-in demonstrations at the Gandhi statue.
In the midst of the constant protests from the opposition the Vice President Venkaiah Naidu is struggling to conduct the affairs smoothly.Now Dhankhar will be facing the same challenges for the next five years.
The government’s strategists of the government are aware of the issues in the Rajya Sabha, so alongwith cheering on the win, they are optimistic that Dhankhar’s lengthy legal, public and legislative experience will assist him in running the House without a hitch.
Speaker of the House in the Rajya Sabha and Union Minister Piyush Goyal felicitated Dhankhar for being elected to the position of Vice President sayingthat his term as Chairman will be a success in managing the activities of the Rajya Sabha efficiently and will benefit the people on issues of national significance.
When Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi who played a key role in deciding the direction of the session of Parliament for the benefit of the government and congratulated Dhankhar for his victory and stated that he has years of experience of legislative, legal and public life that will be of immense benefit to the nation in managing the House.
In the in the midst of ever-growing tensions between the opposition and the government, Dhankhar will not only require the support of the House for the legislative work of the government and the opposition, but he will also need to ensure smooth operations by establishing a better coordination with opposition parties.
The increase of efficiency in the House is also an immense issue for Dhankhar.
