Lufthansa and pilots try to prevent strike with secret pay negotiations

Berlin 9th August : German flag carier Lufthansa is scheduled to have private discussions with Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) the trade union that represents its pilots, following an agreement with the ground crew last week, both sides have confirmed.
“We have scheduled four meetings for the coming weeks to see how far we’re separated,” VC representative Andreas Pinheiro said in a podcast.

VC was looking for a negotiated solution after a vote of its members over strike action the dpa news agency quoted Pinheiro as saying.

Lufthansa confirmed that the talks will take place with no communication with the outside world.

The strike action will be temporarily suspended until the end of the negotiations.

Lufthansa as well as VC have already held six rounds of talks, but without success.

The airline has accepted the VC request for 5.5 percent higher pay for the remainder of this year however there hasn’t been any agreement regarding an automatic inflation-indexed hike starting in 2023 or changes to the structure of the rates.

Lufthansa Chief Executive Carsten Spohr has proposed reserving an amount of aircrafts as previously to pilots of the company’s core.

The company earlier announced the cancellation of an agreement that covers 325 planes until the date of 2021.

The company is also shifting more of its aircraft to its subsidiary companies with low operating costs.

They comprise Eurowings Discover, a long-haul leisure airline, as well as Lufthansa Cityline 2.It is currently in the process of being built.

Lufthansa together with the Verdi union came to an agreement on pay with ground employees last week, covering around 20,000 employees.
