Low pressure area above Bay of Bengal could intensify into cyclone

Bhubaneswar : , Nov 28 : .A new low pressure area is likely to form around November 30 over South Andaman Sea, Bay of Bengal, and could intensify into a “cyclonic storm”, a senior IMD official stated on Sunday.
Mrutyunjay Mhapatra, Director General of IMD, spoke to reporters in Delhi.He said that a low pressure area was likely to form over South Andaman Seas and the Bay of Bengal between November 30th and 31st.

“It is likely that it will become more prominent and move west-northwestwards in the following 48 hours.He said that this could turn into a cyclonic storm in the first week December, affecting Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.

He said that squally weather with maximum sustained winds speeds of up to 60 kmph will prevail over South Andaman Sea, and the adjacent southeast Bay of Bengal, from November 30 to December 2.

The DG stated that Odisha and Andhra Pradesh States will feel the effects of the system when it reaches the central Bay of Bengal.

The system would also bring rain to the coastal and adjourning areas of Odisha starting December 3.Mohapatra said that the location and intensity of the rains will be known when the low pressure area forms.

The IMD DG advised farmers to protect their paddy and other produce from rain.

The fishermen were advised not to venture into deep sea areas of the west-central Bay of Bengal beginning December 2, as the sea conditions are likely to be rough.

The officer of Special Relief Commissioner (SRC), Odisha, has instructed the District Collectors not to ignore the situation and to take any necessary precautionary steps in light of the IMD prediction.
