The company said the decision was taken in response to an increase in punctuality as well as fewer cancellations in the last minute following the introduction of an interim limitation in July, according to DPA news agency.

The limitation of 100,000 daily departures was initially set to last up to September 11 however the date was pushed back.

The equivalent of tens of thousands of flights have already been cancelled this summer, as the industry struggles to keep up with the rising demand for flights amid staff shortages.

Many passengers who fly between and to the airport have faced massive disruptions in the past few months, with lengthy security lines and baggage system malfunctions.

Heathrow claimed that the cap it set in July led in “fewer cancellations last minute” and “shorter wait times to check bags”.

It also said that the capacity limits will be reviewed periodically and “could be raised earlier if there is an ongoing pattern of greater resilience and an increase in the level of resourcing”.
